Bernold Nieuwesteeg works on solutions to complex societal challenges — ranging from cybersecurity and digital autonomy to labor market and sustainability issues.

Building on his PhD research (2014-2018) and as founder of the Centre for the Law and Economics of Cyber Security at Erasmus University, he laid the foundation for the law and economics of cybersecurity. In 2013 he founded the labor market agency CrossOver, which was recognized for several years as one of the fastest-growing companies in the Netherlands and was acquired by Future Works Group in 2025. He also developed initiatives such as the CSAR-Index and the Dutch Cyber Security Lab, and in 2021 launched the monthly webinar series CyberSecurityBooster, where national cyber experts share their insights with hundreds of engaged viewers.

In addition, he is a columnist for AMWeb and Data Cyber Security & Privacy (DCSP), and publishes regularly in outlets such as the Dutch Financial Times (FD), NRC, Binnenlands Bestuur and iBestuur. He teaches at the Blikverruimers Academy and the Specialization Program on Cybercrime & Cybersecurity at Leiden University. He serves on the Advisory Boards and acted as a technical advisor to the Dutch Cyber Security Council on reports including Integral Approach to Cyber Resilience, Dutch Strategic Autonomy and Cybersecurity, and The Cyber Resilience Gap. He is also a frequent speaker and panelist on the strategic perspective of cybersecurity and resilience at organizations such as ASML, iBestuur, ISOC NL and CEPS.

He employs a wide range of instruments — from research and publications to entrepreneurship and platforms — always with societal impact as the goal. As an entrepreneur and law & economics scholar, he challenges established ideas and translates vision into practical solutions.
